Technical employee (f/m/d) to support atmospheric observations in Paris, based at Palaiseau

The Chair of Environmental Meteorology at the Faculty of Environment and Natural Resources of the University of Freiburg is looking for a technical employee (f/m/d) for a full-time position based 100% at École Polytechnique, Palaiseau, Paris.

As part of an EU research project, a measurement campaign is being carried out to research the urban atmosphere in and around Paris. Extensive measurements will be made with ground-based remote sensing systems, in particular using ceilometers, wind lidars, radiometers (broadband, thermal cameras), and scintillometers. The measurement campaign will take place from autumn 2022 to spring 2024. It will be planned and carried out in close cooperation with a local scientific staff member and further supported by scientific and technical staff in Freiburg. Workshop, lab, desk space is at the brand-new state of the art SIRTA atmospheric research observatory in Paris, Palaiseau, providing a unique opportunity to work with many other like-minded technical and fieldwork staff.

The position is fixed term up to March 31, 2024.

Your tasks:

  • Planning, setting up, installing, and commissioning new meteorological measuring equipment. Dismantling and transferring the measuring systems to a new location after the end of the measuring campaign
  • Continuous care and maintenance of the measurement systems and monitoring of their ongoing operation over the period of the measurement campaign
  • Contacting and obtaining installation permits, inventorying, calibrating, managing field equipment
  • Independent functional testing of measuring instruments, repair work to instruments and their supporting structures
  • Continuous documentation of metadata of measurement sites and systems

Your profile:

Required

  • Completed B.Sc. degree (e.g. environmental science, engineering)
  • Knowledge and experience in the installation, configuration, and maintenance of measurement systems
  • Strong ability to plan and prioritise allocated and proposed work activities on a day-to-day basis
  • Class B driving licence for driving a van (small VW transporter) in and around Paris
  • Fluent French; good written and spoken English
  • An outdoors person keen to participate in a novel network of observation sites often on rooftops and unique locations in and around Grand Paris

Preferred

  • Experience with scientific data logger programming (e.g. Campbell Scientific, custom raspberry pi/Arduino)
  • Experience working with meteorological sensors
  • Experience with time series data analysis and visualisation (e.g. python, R) to support the maintenance and diagnosis of instruments

Desired

  • Good written and spoken German
