About the role

Topic: "Coral geochemistry to reconstruct Indonesian Throughflow and its influence on global warmth and monsoon climate variability"

The School of Geography, Geology and the Environment seeks to appoint a postdoctoral researcher in the area of Palaeoclimatology and Geochemistry to perform innovative research in a recently funded NERC Discovery Science project. The research project is in collaboration with the University of Southampton (UoS). The post will be based at the University of Leicester.

The paleo research unit where this position is based will transform understanding of the Indonesian Throughflow and its role in global climate teleconnections by producing new coral geochemical records from strategic sites at the northwest Australian shelf. As part of the multidisciplinary team, you will use the skeletons of giant massive corals to develop long, continuous, high resolution (bi)monthly geochemical proxy records of salinity and temperature from this key region of climate variability vital to warming globally and monsoon climate variability around the world.

Analytical work will involve the high-resolution marine palaeoclimatology laboratory at the UoL (ICP-MS) and the Stable Isotope Laboratory Research Facility at the University of Southampton's Waterfront Campus in its Palaeoceanography and Palaeoclimate Research Group. Our project also involves collaborations with climate modellers and oceanographers from the Climate Research Centre at the UNSW Sydney (Australia), the Australian Institute of Marine Science and the Commonwealth Research Organisation (Australia).

The successful candidate will get the opportunity to assist in the delivery of taught and field courses, as well as Year 4 research student supervision. The School hosts a vibrant cohort of postgraduate research students; we encourage co-supervision of PhD students.

We will support the successful applicant’s research by ensuring they have access to our Facilities and are integrated into a thriving research environment. We will provide mentoring in both education and research and support the postholder in submitting Fellowships/Grants to support their continued career growth and become a long-term member of the research team beyond this post.

With a PhD, or equivalent, plus relevant experience in Palaeoceanography, Paleoclimatology, Isotope and Trace Element Geochemistry, you will have a growing reputation in a relevant field with a developing international reputation.
