Meteorological Developer / Modeler

New Zealand's National Meteorological Service, MetService, is a successful global weather company. Heavily technology based, MetService employs about 300 staff and is headquartered in New Zealand's capital, Wellington.

New Zealand's meteorological challenges are unique. Our island country is narrow and mountainous, placed half-way between the Equator and the South Pole causing frequent passages of vigorous mid-latitude weather systems. Our rugged terrain exhibits large west-east differences in rainfall and temperature over short distances, whereas the hills hugely influence wind variations. In the summer months, we may see the tails of cyclones from the South Pacific tropics, while in winter, we can experience polar outbreaks. As far as the weather is concerned, there is never a dull moment.

We have a great opportunity in our Forecast Research and Development team for someone enthusiastic about numerical prediction and weather forecasting.

If you are excited about being involved in prototyping and testing state-of-the-art numerical weather prediction systems, and the development of operational systems, then this might be you.

As a research software engineer, you'll have:

  • An honours degree or above in meteorology, mathematics, physics, or related fields (postgraduate qualifications preferred),
  • 3+ years of experience with dynamical atmospheric modelling, atmospheric dispersion modelling and/or meteorological data assimilation (preferably WRF, HYSPLIT and/or GSI),
  • Familiarity with Linux, Amazon Web Services, high-performance computing; or other experience with running operational forecasting systems,
  • Solid software development skills (e.g., in Python, Fortran),
  • The ability to communicate technical ideas to non-scientific audiences,
  • Familiarity with Agile methodologies particularly Scrum is a plus.

The Forecast Research and Development team is an international group of scientists. Our multi-disciplinary expertise enables us to support a range of activities from implementation of an idea in prototypes, to high-quality software development of operational applications, to agile support of customer requests and support of operations. We look forward to hearing from you.

Why join us? We enjoy achieving, we appreciate creativity, and we recognise everyone's unique skills and qualities. This allows us to be passionate about what we do; and to deliver products and services that have positive outcomes for our commercial customers and the people of New Zealand.
