Your future team:

We are offering an exciting opportunity to join our dynamic team of catastrophe risk modellers, managers and scientists. Our expertise lies in translating scientific data into valuable information that contributes to the strategy and decisions of world-leading insurers, reinsurers, financial institutions and international development agencies.

Your role:

You will gain a range of experience and build new skills through working on our diverse flood risk management projects and services.

Key responsibilities:

  • Preparing and delivering probabilistic portfolio analyses to a wide range of clients using JBA's flood models
  • Contributing to JBA's growing international development work by writing and submitting proposals for new projects and supporting flood risk analysis for vulnerable countries
  • Generating Flood Assessment Reports to meet client specifications
  • Contributing to JBA's Event Response work by monitoring real-time events and producing flood footprints
  • Writing analytical reports to communicate results to clients
  • Validating flood models for emerging markets
  • Supporting climate change related consultancy work
  • Adhering to data quality control standards

The team member we are looking for

Our team's ideal candidate will be a bright graduate or post-graduate with a strong academic background in natural hazards or a relevant scientific or mathematical subject. You should be looking to pursue a career in catastrophe model analysis and development.

Essential attributes you should demonstrate include;

  • enthusiasm to learn and adapt
  • professionalism and organisation
  • a technical background with strong numerical data handling and scientific analysis skills
  • the ability to work independently or as part of a team to meet deadlines
  • the ability to understand and communicate technical concepts via written reports and oral presentations, to both technical and non-technical audiences

Additionally, you ideally would demonstrate experience in one or more of the following areas;

  • experience using GIS (ideally ArcGIS and/or QGIS)
  • experience in numerical natural hazard modelling
  • an understanding of the re/insurance industries
  • capabilities in PostgreSQL/PostGIS

The role will be based in our eco-friendly, modern offices at Broughton Park, near Skipton, North Yorkshire. This unique work setting sits on the boundary of the Yorkshire Dales National Park and offers easy access to stunning countryside. Skipton is a bustling market town with great schools, services and leisure facilities, and is within easy reach of Leeds, Bradford, Manchester and the Lake District.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, our team is working remotely and we supply basic equipment to our staff to support this.
