  • £39,000 - £50,000 per annum (negotiable, depending on experience)
  • 30 days' paid annual leave (plus Bank Holidays)

Location: flexible (mainly a remote role with occasional travel to the office)
Hours of work: 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday

NWS' mission is to protect people and the environment by managing the UK's nuclear waste innovatively and sustainably.

Part of NWS' mission is to deliver a Geological Disposal Facility and provide radioactive waste management solutions. The GDF will play an important role in resolving the long-outstanding environmental issue of how we safely dispose of legacy and future nuclear waste. It will be one of the most significant national infrastructure projects in the UK and will create investment and employment opportunities which will last for decades.

Applicants must have experience of the following:

  • Good first degree in chemistry, chemical sciences, or environmental chemistry. A PhD in a radiochemistry discipline, or a closely related field.
  • Experience of specifying and delivering research into radionuclide complexation (organic/inorganic) and/or transport in environmental media, or radionuclide interaction with engineered materials, as well as in interpreting and evaluating results using a variety of quantitative and narrative approaches.
  • Effective communication of technical aspects to both specialist and non-technical audiences.
  • Proven ability to design and execute laboratory experiments, collaborate with field staff, and interpret research in order to close knowledge gaps and solve problems
  • Willingness to work as part of a dynamic technical team and proven ability to influence collaborative and contracted projects to gain the requisite outcomes.
  • Able to pass BPSS level security clearance

Ideally applicants should also have:

  • Chartered, or working toward chartership, with a relevant professional institute.
  • Experience of technical project management, including project scoping, budgeting, contracting and supply chain management.

Role information:

Successful candidates will report directly to the Principal Geoscience Manager, or to a senior member of the Applied Science & Research Team. Responsible for obtaining solutions by defining and delivering research programmes in specified areas of expertise in support of internal end-users' needs (Site Evaluation, Site Characterisation, Permitting, Engineering and Design and Environmental Safety Case and the generic and site-specific disposal system). Responsible for collaboration with users and collectors of radiochemistry information across the organisation.
