Tenure Track Assistant Professor in Palaeoclimatic Geochemistry

The Department of Geoscience, Aarhus University, Denmark invites applications for a Tenure Track Assistant Professorship in geochemistry. We seek an innovative and visionary geoscientist, who applies geochemistry in the field of palaeoceanography and palaeoclimatology.


The ideal candidate will demonstrate high-level research in palaeoceanography and palaeoclimatology based on inorganic and organic geochemistry, combined with multi-proxy analyses, of marine sediments. Experience with Arctic environments, ecosystem reconstructions, micropalaeontology, sedimentology, and fieldwork will be advantageous. Candidates with hands-on experience with analytical procedures and instruments (including GC-MS, LA-ICP-MS, and ICP-MS) will be preferred. Knowledge of GIS applications and multivariate statistics in teaching and research is welcome.

The successful candidate will have a strong international research standing and a broad research network. Their scientific profile will be reflected in relevant publications in international peer-reviewed journals. Proven ability to attract external research funding and documented teaching skills are required.

The appointee will expand research collaborations at the highest international level following their scientific interests and priorities and establish a vibrant research group utilizing external funding from national and international sources. The appointee will develop classroom courses and supervise students at all academic levels. Within the Department of Geoscience, the appointee will develop collaboration with other research groups in climate, sedimentology, geochronology, Quaternary geology and natural resources.

Department of Geoscience

The Department of Geoscience currently employs around 110 staff and has a strong research profile spanning a broad range of geological and geophysical disciplines including the basic and applied aspects of the Quaternary system (palaeoceanography, landscape evolution, glacial geology, sedimentary record, stratigraphy, geochronology, hydrogeology, hydrogeophysics). These fields are represented by several professors, associate professors, assistant professors, post-doctoral fellows and Ph.D. students. The Department is well equipped for Quaternary research and teaching with infrastructure including sedimentological, geochronological (cosmogenic-nuclide dating), geochemical and micropalaeontological laboratories, as well as a full range of geophysical infrastructure. We also have strong links to other departments at Aarhus University, including Physics and Astronomy, Engineering, Biology, and Archeology.

Natural Sciences Tenure Track

Highly qualified candidates are appointed as Assistant Professors for a period of six years with the prospect of performance- based advancement to a tenured Associate Professorship.

The aim of the Natural Sciences Tenure Track Programme is to:

As part of the Aarhus University Tenure Track Programme, the University carries out a mid-way evaluation to review the progress of the tenure track candidate after three years, according to the same criteria used in the final tenure review. The final tenure review is conducted after five and a half years. If the review is positive, the candidate will be offered a tenured position as Associate Professor at Aarhus University.

Shortlisting is used. This means that after the deadline for applications – and with the assistance from the assessment committee chairman, and the assessment committee if necessary, – the head of department selects the candidates to be evaluated. The selection is made on the basis of an assessment of who of the candidates are most relevant considering the requirements of the advertisement. All applicants will be notified within 6 weeks whether or not their applications have been sent to an expert assessment committee for evaluation. The selected applicants will be informed about the composition of the committee and will receive his/her assessment. Once the recruitment process is completed a final letter of rejection is sent to the deselected applicants.

Formalities and salary range

Natural Sciences refers to the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Danish Universities under the Danish Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.

The application must be in English and include a curriculum vitae, degree certificate, a complete list of publications, a statement of future research plans and information about research activities, teaching portfolio and verified information on previous teaching experience (if any). Appointment shall be in accordance with the collective labour agreement between the Danish Ministry of Taxation and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations.
