Professorship (f/m/d) salary group W2/W3 in tenured civil service for Environmental Geophysics

Position description - job and applicant profile

General: We seek a personality (f/m/d) with outstanding scientific qualifications in the field of applied geophysics. Experience in the development and application of modern non-seismic geophysical methods for the exploration and characterization of the shallow marine and terrestrial subsurface is expected. Methodologically, this should include potential methods, geoelectrics or electromagnetic (EM) methods to complement the existing spectrum of the Bremen location. Experience in the application of modern laboratory techniques for magnetic and physical characterization of sediments and rocks is desired. If the general civil service requirements are met, tenure will be granted. Classification in group W2 or W3 will be based on personal experience in teaching and successful completion of research projects.

Research: The research focus should be on the geophysical investigation of climate-related environmental changes and anthropogenic influences. Topics could include interdisciplinary studies related to climate change and energy transition, object search, geohazard assessment or subsurface fluid transport. Participation in marine and land-based field campaigns is expected. Participation in the research programme of MARUM - Center for Marine Environmental Sciences is expected. We also offer the opportunity to cooperate with regional research partners such as the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research, Bremerhaven and the Fraunhofer Institute for Wind Energy Systems. Research experience in an international context with relevant publication activity is a prerequisite. In addition, appropriate experience in the acquisition of third-party funding projects and the willingness to acquire third-party funding are expected.

Teaching: Responsibilities include assuming of a teaching load of 9 lecture hours (LVS) per semester in the international Bachelor's and Master's programmes of the faculty. The teaching of the subject area is to represent geophysics in its entire breadth with a focus on applied geophysics and to contribute to the further development of the subject as well as to the international profiling of the faculty. Teaching should include subject-related geophysical basic and field training, instrumental methodology and data evaluation, as well as geohazards and renewable energies.

Other: Classes are held in German and English. The willingness to teach English-language courses and to offer German-language courses after two years at the latest is required. Active promotion of early career researchers is expected. Furthermore, interest, willingness and, if applicable, experience in the area of innovations in teaching, continuing training in higher education didactics, academic self-administration and institute development/management are expected. Furthermore, critical reflection on issues of gender justice, diversity and anti-discrimination in research and teaching is expected.

Employment criteria & prerequisites

A completed academic university degree with a focus on geophysics, a relevant outstanding doctorate in one of the aforementioned research areas, further academic (habilitation or habilitation-equivalent) achievements in the field of geophysics, pedagogical aptitude and didactic commitment are required. The appointment is based on § 18 BremHG and § 116 BremBG.
