Earth Sciences Technician
Carleton University, Canada's Capital University, is seeking a qualified candidate to fill the role of Earth Sciences Technician with the Department of Earth Sciences.
The Earth Sciences Technician reports to the Technician, Curator and Outreach Coordinator in the Department of Earth Sciences and is under the authority of the Department Chair. Laboratory supervision, training and technical duties comprise 75% of the job, facility coordination and administration comprises 20% of the job, and 5% is allocated to "other" tasks as assigned.
The incumbent is responsible for the supervision of the Sample Preparation Laboratory in the Department of Earth Sciences, training and supervising users, and preparation of geological materials for analysis. Geological samples are prepared for thin section, X-ray, chemical and other geological analysis for all members of the Department as well as outside clients. The high quality of the resulting product is essential for the support of research and teaching and to ensure the continued excellent reputation of the department.
The incumbent is responsible for ensuring that the laboratory and use of the laboratory equipment conforms to the Ontario Health and Safety Act and represents best safety and workplace practices. The incumbent responds to any emergencies in the laboratory. The incumbent is responsible for service, maintenance and updating of equipment in the laboratory, as well as other related duties as necessary to ensure sound operation of the Department's facilities. The incumbent coordinates facility bookings, invoices, prepares monthly and annual usage statistics, and cooperates with the Department Administrator in preparing annual accounting statements.
