PhD position in geochemistry of magmatic rocks
of the Aegean arc (m/d/f)

The working group in geochemistry and petrology at the GeoZentrum Nordbayern seeks to fill one PhD position to start as soon as possible for a period of three years with possible extension of six months. Payment will be according to the German TV-L E13 50 to 75% scale.

The doctoral candidate will work on the petrology, geochemistry and geochronology of magmatic rocks of the Aegean arc in order to study processes of magma formation and arc migration. The work will consist of field work and sampling, the geochemical analysis of rocks and minerals, the determination of ages of rocks, and the modeling of magmatic processes. The applicant will be expected to publish the research results in international peer-reviewed journals, and participate in national and international conferences. The doctoral candidate will be part of an internationally recognised working group in geochemistry, petrology and volcanology with access to excellent analytical facilities including electron microprobe, XRF, LA ICPMS, ICPMS, MC ICPMS, and TIMS.

Applicants must hold a MSc in geosciences or equivalent and have a strong interest and background in magmatic geochemistry and petrology. Good skills in spoken and written English are essential. Some experience with analytical methods (e.g. electron microprobe, clean lab chemical procedures, quadrupole ICP-MS, multicollector mass spectrometry) and with interpretation of geochemical data is desirable.

The University of Erlangen-Nürnberg intends to increase the number of women in research and teaching positions, and therefore strongly encourages female researchers to apply. Disabled applicants will be preferentially considered in case of equivalent qualification.

Applications including cover/motivation letter (2 pages), curriculum vitae, academic transcripts, and contact information of two referees should be submitted by email in a single pdf file no later than April 14th 2024. Application documents and inquiries about the position should be sent to Prof. Dr. Karsten Haase (karsten.haase@fau.de).
