For this position, we are interested in investigating the influence of different metabolisms (e.g., sulfate reduction, methanogenesis) on carbonate biomineralization. Specifically, the main goals are to identify the polymorphs formed, determine their isotopic signatures and evaluate the mineralogical and compositional changes over time. This work is important for interpreting carbonates in natural systems and their use in paleo-environmental reconstructions.
Applicants should have a PhD degree by date of appointment, a background in microbiology, geochemistry, chemistry, or a related field. Experience in either stable isotopes or microbiology, and in performing laboratory experiments are required. Familiarity in performing aqueous experiments and using different mineralogical and analytical techniques (e.g., XRD, ATR-FTIR, Raman, SEM, ICP, IRMS) is highly desirable. An advanced level in English is expected and working knowledge of Spanish, although not required, is an advantage.
The selected candidate will work in collaboration with and under the guidance of Dr. Maria P. Asta, Prof. Concepcion Jimenez-Lopez (Department of Microbiology of the University of Granada), Dr. Antonio Garcia-Alix (Department of Paleontology of the University of Granada), and an international team.
