Senior Researcher in applied and computational geophysics

The Geological Survey of Finland (GTK) is looking for a senior researcher in the field of applied geophysics.

You will be closely working with our associate research professor in geophysics and you will be a part of the bedrock and mineral mapping team within GTK's Geophysical Solutions unit in Espoo, Kuopio or Rovaniemi.

You will work on the development and implementation of novel methods for forward and inverse modelling of massive and diverse geophysical data, as well as the application of those methods to particularly electromagnetic but also other types of data sets (potential field data, etc.) in the context of scientific problems relevant to GTK. Further duties will include participation of field work and publication of results in scientific journals. Your own initiative in attempting the acquisition of research funding is encouraged.

What we expect

  • You hold a PhD in Geophysics, Physics, Applied Mathematics or a related field
  • You have ample experience in the development of computational scientific codes with a good understanding of the theory of numerical methods
  • You have a solid publication record with relevant topics
  • You have a deep understanding of the theory of electromagnetic geophysical methods
  • You are ready, able and willing to travel and to do field work
  • You have excellent English communication and writing skills

You take initiative and work independently. You are passionate about learning new things. You maintain a structured and organised working style even under pressure and have good prioritisation skills. We expect you to be innovative and development oriented.

We appreciate

  • good understanding and theoretical background of potential field geophysics
  • experience with practical aspects of controlled source electromagnetics and/or magnetotelluric methods
  • relevant experience with the use of high-performance computing resources
  • experience with scientific funding acquisition

Information about pay

The total salary at the beginning of employment will be approximately EUR 3 990 - 4 730 per month depending on your qualifications.

The position is fixed term. The starting date is 1.3.2021 or by agreement. The term is for two years initially with the possibility of extension.
