Research Scientist: Geochemical fingerprinting for battery raw materials traceability

At GTK, we aim to work for the Earth and for Us. We conduct objective research to find solutions to challenges posed by climate change, the energy transition, and the circular economy. Our 400 experts are specialists in the mineral economy, green energy, water management, the environment, and digital solutions. Together with our Finnish and global partners, we are building sustainable and carbon-neutral future. GTK is a research organization governed by the Finnish Ministry of Employment and the Economy.

The Geological Survey of Finland (GTK) is looking for an experienced researcher in the field of geochemistry, petrology, and mineralogy to work within the Circular Economy Solutions Unit in our Espoo Research laboratory. You will be acting as a specialist and researcher for the Business Finland project BATTRACE and the Horizon Europe project MaDiTracE as part of an international research team. Both projects are focusing on battery raw materials traceability through the mining and materials value chain.

Your tasks will be related to the above-mentioned projects, conducting research on the traceability of battery raw materials (lithium, cobalt, and graphite notably), through the study of geochemical fingerprints of battery ores & minerals, and their conservation from mining, mineral processing to the final product. The position will involve working with variable materials from ores and concentrates to high-purity metallic, chemical products or battery materials in the Espoo Research Laboratory, taking advantage of its modern and versatile analytical facilities. You will be responsible for carrying out mineralogical research, practical analytical work, and method development, particularly related to Laser Ablation ICP-MS and SEM-EDS instruments. Other closely linked analytical methods that are used in GTK analytical workflows, include Optical microscopy, EPMA, X-CT, XRD, and micro-XRF. In addition to performing analytical work, you will compile or generate a database of existing and historical data, and therefore skills in multivariate and statistical data analysis are expected. You will present the results at conferences, workshops, and project meetings, as well as regularly publish results in high-quality peer-reviewed academic journals.

What we expect

  • A Ph.D. in Geochemistry, Geology, Petrology or Mineralogy
  • Hands-on experience with LA-ICP-MS and SEM-EDS instruments
  • A comprehensive knowledge of other geo-analytical techniques and hardware know-how
  • Experience in multivariate data analysis and statistical analyses
  • Excellent command of spoken and written English
  • A record of scientific publications and attendance at international conferences
  • Strong IT skills
  • Readiness and ability to travel

You are an adaptable team player, but also take the initiative and work independently on new and highly innovative projects. You should be passionate about learning new things, work well under pressure, and have good prioritization skills. You have good cooperation, networking, and communication skills.

We appreciate

  • Knowledge of raw material value chains, in particular for battery raw materials
  • Knowledge of the domestic and international battery raw materials flows and trade
  • Experience in working in a clean laboratory
  • Basic knowledge of mineral processing and hydrometallurgy
  • Knowledge of Laboratory Quality Management
  • Finnish language skills
