The Geological Survey of Finland (GTK) is looking for an experienced researcher in the field of geochemistry, petrology, and mineralogy to work within the Circular Economy Solutions Unit in our Espoo Research laboratory. You will be acting as a specialist and researcher for the Business Finland project BATTRACE and the Horizon Europe project MaDiTracE as part of an international research team. Both projects are focusing on battery raw materials traceability through the mining and materials value chain.
Your tasks will be related to the above-mentioned projects, conducting research on the traceability of battery raw materials (lithium, cobalt, and graphite notably), through the study of geochemical fingerprints of battery ores & minerals, and their conservation from mining, mineral processing to the final product. The position will involve working with variable materials from ores and concentrates to high-purity metallic, chemical products or battery materials in the Espoo Research Laboratory, taking advantage of its modern and versatile analytical facilities. You will be responsible for carrying out mineralogical research, practical analytical work, and method development, particularly related to Laser Ablation ICP-MS and SEM-EDS instruments. Other closely linked analytical methods that are used in GTK analytical workflows, include Optical microscopy, EPMA, X-CT, XRD, and micro-XRF. In addition to performing analytical work, you will compile or generate a database of existing and historical data, and therefore skills in multivariate and statistical data analysis are expected. You will present the results at conferences, workshops, and project meetings, as well as regularly publish results in high-quality peer-reviewed academic journals.
