Master's Programme in Geology and Geophysics
The Master's Programme in Geology and Geophysics at the University of Helsinki provides you with the knowledge and skills to tackle timely questions concerning the evolution of the Earth, its role as the source of raw materials needed by modern society, and related environmental issues. We aim to provide a deep understanding of geological and geophysical processes within the Earth and how they interact with the atmosphere, hydrosphere, and biosphere.
Our student training is based on research covering multiple branches of the Geosciences, divided into four thematic study tracks: Hydrogeology and Environmental Geology, Palaeontology and Global Change, Petrology and Economic Geology, and Solid Earth Geophysics. A Bachelor's degree in Geology, Geophysics, or Physics with a Geology minor is required for admission. The degree is designed to be completed in two years.
Depending on the study track, your degree and internship experience in the programme will open opportunities for employment with mining companies, government agencies and/or consulting firms, and also serves as a potential pathway to further study. The Career Services group at the University of Helsinki works in cooperation with the programme to help develop your expert identity during your studies.
