Master's Programme in Geology and Geophysics

Study at the University of Helsinki and gain a deep understanding of geological and geophysical processes within the Earth.

The Master's Programme in Geology and Geophysics trains you to address pressing questions concerning our home planet's evolution and future, its role as the source of raw materials needed by modern civilisation, and environmental challenges.

Upon completion of the programme, you will have gained expertise in a number of scientific and professional skills, including, depending on your course choices:

  1. Assessment of geological materials (minerals, rock types, bedrock, groundwater)
  2. Understanding the genesis and sustainable use of mineral commodities
  3. Sustainable use of the environment from the Earth Science perspective
  4. Palaeontology and modelling global change using the geological record
  5. The physical evolution of the Earth (plate tectonics, interplay of the mantle and crust)
  6. Independent and team-driven project research
  7. High-level scientific writing (M.Sc. thesis and related work)
  8. Presentation of scientific results to scientists, students, and the general public

Eligibility criteria

You can apply to the Master's Programme in Geology and Geophysics if you meet the following criteria:
  1. You have completed a first- or second-cycle (bachelor's or master's) degree or a postgraduate degree at a higher education institution in Finland or abroad, or will do so by end of August 2024.
  2. You have sufficient skills in Finnish, Swedish or English.
  3. You have completed a sufficient amount of studies applicable to the master's programme.

Your previous academic performance will be evaluated as part of the application process.

Tuition fees

  1. EU/EEA citizens: NO TUITION FEE
  2. Non-EU/EEA citizens (including UK): 15 000 EUR per year (HOWEVER, the highest-ranked applicants may qualify for a fee waiver, see below)

  • Non-EU/EEA applicants who are liable to pay fees can apply for a fee waiver during the application process. 100% and 50% fee waivers will be offered to some of the highest-ranked applicants.
  • Additionally, a Finland Scholarship (100% fee waiver + relocation grant) will be offered to one of the top-ranked applicants.
