Postdoctoral Fellowships in Geology: Department of Geology,
University of Johannesburg

The Department of Geology, University of Johannesburg, offers several postdoctoral fellowships to undertake research in geology. Current focus areas of the department include Precambrian mineral deposits and tectonics, geometallurgy, coal geology and organic petrology, palaeomagnetism, medical geology, detrital zircon provenance studies, and early Precambrian environments and geobiology. In-house analytical facilities include XRF, XRD, SEM, TEM, MLA, µXRF, EPMA, LA-MC-ICP-MS, noble gas MS, micro-Raman, organic petrology, and a palaeomag lab with SQUID.

The department hosts the DSI-NRF Centre of Excellence in Integrated Mineral and Energy Resource Analysis (CIMERA), a central hub for research in economic geology in Africa (https://cimera.co.za), and the Palaeoproterozoic Mineralisation Research Group (PPM). The fellowships are available from January 2024. Appointees will engage in full-time postdoctoral research on an approved project with UJ Geology staff members. The participation in teaching at undergraduate level including field classes is encouraged. The fellowship consists of a minimum tax-free stipend of ZAR 230 000 per annum (up to R300 000) and is renewable for a second year subject to satisfactory progress.

We encourage applications from candidates who have an interest in Precambrian geology and mineral deposits, although any specialization will be considered. Eligible candidates must hold a Ph.D. in Geosciences.
