Project Description

The Mineral Exploration Research Centre, at the Harquail School of Earth Sciences at Laurentian University, seeks applicants for a Senior Research Associate position to conduct tectonic and metallogenic research in the Archean Superior Craton, as part of the Metal Earth project.

Responsibilities

This position will take a lead role in compiling and integrating geologic and geophysical datasets to develop a tectonic and metallogenic framework of the Abitibi and Wabigoon subprovinces. Significant research experience in Archean tectonics and metallogeny and integration of complex datasets is a requirement. The candidate will work closely with a research team at 6 different universities so expertise working across disciplines is required.

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

  • Minimum PhD degree in Geology with research experience in Precambrian geology
  • A strong publication record
  • Superior analytical skills and the ability to solve problems using database and 3D software tools
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

Funding

The appointment is renewable on an annual basis for up to 3 years, is contingent upon funding, and has a salary of $90-120K/year plus benefits. Start-up funds and an annual research budget may be included in the position depending upon qualifications. The anticipated start date is September, 2022 or as soon as possible. The position reports to management of Metal Earth and will remain posted until the position is filled.

Metal Earth is an applied R&D program led by the Mineral Exploration Research Centre (MERC), a semi-autonomous research center at Laurentian University and comprised of internationally recognized researchers from Harquail School of Earth Sciences and partners from academia, industry, and government. Metal Earth is the largest mineral exploration research project ever undertaken in Canada. This research initiative aims to understand the processes responsible for Earth's differential metal endowment and to transform how we explore for metals.
