Metal Earth Postdoctoral Fellow Position

With CAD $104 million in funding provided by the Canada First Research Excellence Fund and through strategic partnerships led by Laurentian University, with 4 Canadian universities, 6 government geological surveys and 3 international research centres, Metal Earth is the largest ever mineral exploration research project undertaken in Canada.
We seek applicants for 2 PDF positions:
1) Dating and sources of auriferous fluids along the Larder-Kirkland segment. The Metal Earth team has determined the age of gold mineralization and source of sulfur in the Val-d'Or vein field. There is a difference in the regional H-O isotope composition between the eastern (Vald'Or) and western (Larder-Kirkland) parts of the Cadillac-Larder Lake Fault zone which raises the question about the timing of auriferous fluid flow and source of sulfur in the gold deposits of the western segment. Objectives: 1) date by U-Pb monazite and xenotime that are coeval with gold deposition events; 2) assess the source of sulfur in sulfides coeval with gold using in situ multiple sulfur isotopes.
2) The Grenville Front east of Val-d'Or: a window into the Superior middle-lower crust. The Metal Earth team has shown negative Δ33S values in gold-related sulfides in Val-d'Or orogenic gold veins, which indicate a derivation of S from Archean volcanic rocks, in contrast to the positive Δ33S values of gold deposits in sedimentary rocks of the Abitibi (Canadian Malartic). The Grenville Front east of Val-d'Or contains Neoarchean high grade metamorphic rocks with minimal Grenvillian overprint, offering a rare window in the lower crust of the Val-d'Or vein field. Objectives: 1) date peak metamorphism; 2) determine P-T conditions of peak metamorphism; 3) estimate depletion is gold and associated elements in various grade metamorphic rocks; 4) estimate the composition of fluids and sulfur produced during prograde metamorphism.
The PDF will contribute to supervision of graduate students, within a team integrated with other researchers of the Metal Earth program. The research will include field and laboratory work. The PDF candidates must hold a PhD since a maximum of 3 years at the start of the position. Experience in Archean terrane geology, and strong fundamental and laboratory expertise are required in areas specific for each PDF position. The 2-year positions will start as soon as possible.
Salary will be determined according to the collective agreement in place at the time of hire. Salary range is from $50 000 to $75 000 per year plus benefits.
