About the Faculty of Science & Technology

The Faculty of Science and Technology currently offers bachelor's degrees in Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Environmental Science, Geology, and General Science. The department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, within the Faculty of Science and Technology, supports three disciplines: Environmental Science, Geography, and Geology.

About the Role

The Department of Earth & Environmental Sciences, Faculty of Science and Technology at Mount Royal University invites applications for a tenure track position, which will commence July 1, 2022, subject to final budgetary approval, at the Rank of Assistant Professor.

We are looking for candidates whose research and teaching interests enhance our existing departmental strengths, and add new, innovative approaches to research and teaching. The appointee should have an interest in collaborating with industrial partners and to develop fruitful collaboration with other researchers at the university. Given the size of the department, applicants should have the ability to teach courses outside of their main area of expertise.

The successful candidate will:

  • Have earned a PhD degree in Earth Sciences, Geology, or related discipline by the time of appointment.
  • Demonstrate a primary commitment to undergraduate teaching and is expected to contribute to teaching in the fields of petroleum geology, geophysics, earth surface processes, and resource utilization.
  • Have a strong research potential and a broad multidisciplinary research network with the potential to develop a scholarship program that involves undergraduate students and is feasible within our institutional context.
  • Be eligible for registration as a Professional Geoscientist with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta.

The following are qualities that are desirable:

  • A record of teaching excellence at the undergraduate level.
  • Experience with various geophysical methods including seismic, magnetic, electric, gravitational, electromagnetic, magnetotelluric, and/or ground-penetrating radar, and knowledge of acquisition of geophysical data.
  • Expertise in the applications of petroleum geology as it relates to renewable energies, climate change, carbon-dioxide capture and storage, or low-carbon/carbon-cycle technologies.
  • The ability to attract external research funding, or clear promise thereof.
