Scientific coworker, BMWK-funded project SMART-EGS flow localization in fracture rocks

The Institute of Geology, Minerology and Geophysics at Ruhr-Universität Bochum is looking for a scientific coworker (TV-L13, 3 years) in a cooperative, BMWK-funded project SMART-EGS. The work package of the party at RUB aims at providing benchmark data for numerical simulations and improving our understanding of flow localization in fracture rocks, and accordingly involves:

  1. Coordinating, preparing, conducting, and evaluating pumping tests in the Bedretto underground laboratory (Switzerland)
  2. Numerical modeling of the effect of packers on the stress field around a borehole
  3. Advancing hydromechanical modeling of discrete fractures
  4. Reporting and publication

The successful candidate will have a master degree or PhD in geoscience, engineering, or related science disciplines ensuring a sound background in (hydro)mechanics. An affinity to numerical modeling is necessary, as is the willingness and physical ability to perform field tests in a mine environment. Experience with field testing will be beneficial. Proficiency in written and spoken English is a necessity. Interested applicants should send a CV and a letter of motivation to Jörg Renner (joerg.renner@rub.de) no later than February 21st, 2024. Employment shall start soonest possible. Integrating the project work into a dissertation project is a matter of discussion.
