PhD position in Thermochronology and Tectonics

Applications are invited for a fully funded 4 year PhD project at the Department of Geology at Salzburg University, Austria. The candidate will have the chance to be actively involved in installing a new thermochronological laboratory and method development, while working on more applied questions related to tectonic geomorphology.

Within the project Zircons and Landscapes, a systematic comparison between apparent (i.e. cooling) and absolute (i.e. crystallization) ages of zircons will be performed. This will be done in tephra layers exposed on the Aeolian Islands and / or the Calabrian Arc. In a second step, thermochronological data will be used to constrain the landscape evolution of the Calabrian Arc, focusing on its youngest exhumation history, in particular in the light of deep-seated versus surficial processes.
