The Faculty and School

UNE has a vibrant research culture and a rich and extensive history in geoscience. Our Earth Sciences department achieved a ranking of 5 for the Australian Research Council's Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA), which translates to an outstanding research record 'well above world standard'. UNE has a long history of teaching and research in the Earth Sciences and is conveniently located in the heart of the New England region, providing an excellent natural laboratory for studying all aspects of the discipline.

The School of Environmental and Rural Science (SERS) is an active and dynamic school of environmental scientists, agronomists, geneticists, zoologists, plant scientists, soils scientists, and ecologists. The school sits within the Faculty of Science, Agriculture, Business and Law, which includes internationally recognised scholars with diverse teaching, research, and professional and community backgrounds. We are a leading provider of both on-campus and online or distance education, offering flexible learning options for students throughout the year. About the role

As a Lecturer in Earth Sciences, you will join a successful, enthusiastic and versatile team of geoscientists who teach and research across a range of areas such as economic geology, tectonics, palaeontology, petrology, structural geology, environmental geology, geochemistry, sedimentology and remote sensing. You will teach into our Bachelor of Geoscience course and lead a strong research program in your relevant area of expertise. A collaborative approach to 'team' teaching, supportive research student supervision, applying for external research grants and collaboration in community engagement programs are expected activities of the position. Importantly, we are seeking applicants who are willing to champion the role of women in this discipline.

About you

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • A doctoral qualification in Geology or Palaeontology
  • Expertise in a complementary discipline within Geology or Palaeontology, and relevant postdoctoral experience.
  • Capacity for innovative, research-driven teaching and curriculum development in online and face-to-face settings.
  • An outstanding research record (relative to opportunity), including publications in high quality, peer-reviewed journals that align with our ERA 5 in Geology
  • Teaching and/or research excellence (relative to opportunity) in one or more of the following disciplines: Sedimentology, Palaeontology, Geochemistry, Tectonics, Field Mapping, Structural Geology.
  • Potential to lead a research program and attract significant external funding.
  • Commitment to a diverse and inclusive academic environment.

And it is desirable that you have experience in research supervision, online teaching and/or innovation in curriculum development and some knowledge of GIS software
