ERC funded PhD position in experimental petrology/geochemistry at the Earth Sciences department of the Università degli Studi di Milano, Italy

Application deadline 26 July 2023

Position. We are seeking candidates for a PhD position to investigate volatilisation of planetary materials. The candidate will perform experiments to volatilise silicate liquids representing molten planetary mantles to investigate vapour-liquid equilibration processes and chemical properties of vapour and liquid. These experiments will be performed in a new high-temperature furnace for experiments up to 3000°C, which has recently been installed.

The position is part of a project that seeks to quantify the role of vapour loss on the properties of planetary bodies during their formation and is funded by European Research Council Starting Grant Vaploss. As such, the candidate will work in a team that further consists of two post-doctoral researchers and the principal investigator (Dr. Remco Hin), under a supervisory team consisting of Dr. Remco Hin, Prof. Massimo Tiepolo and Prof. Stefano Poli. The position is funded for 3 years.

Working environment. The Department of Earth Sciences, Università degli Studi di Milano, is one of Italy's five Centres of Excellence in Earth Sciences and it is excellently equipped for experimental petrology and geochemistry-based research into Earth and planetary sciences. This environment provides the candidate with ample opportunity to develop their academic skills.

In addition to its existing experimental and analytical, state-of-the-art cleanrooms for trace metal isotope geochemistry will be available soon.

Application requirements. All details regarding application requirements and procedures can be found on the website of the Università degli Studi di Milano at the following web address, in either English or Italian: https://www.unimi.it/en/education/postgraduate-and-continuing-education-programmes/doctoral-programmes-phd/ay-2023/2024-earth-sciences. Experience with experimental petrology and/or analytical equipment would be advantageous. Good communication skills in English are desirable, as is the ability to work in a (multi-disciplinary) team.

For further details or question regarding the application procedure, please contact Dr. Remco Hin (remco.hin@igag.cnr.it).
