Tenure Track Scientist - Geology & Geophysics
The Geology & Geophysics Department at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) invites qualified candidates to apply for a tenure-track scientific-staff position with primary expertise in understanding processes related to mass, heat and/or biogeochemical exchange between the seafloor and ocean. Candidates’ interests may span a wide range of seafloor settings, including across active and passive plate boundaries. Candidates should have experience and/or strong interest in active sea-going research programs, including the use of deep submergence vehicles and related technologies.
The Geology and Geophysics department at WHOI has an international reputation for innovative use and development of deep submergence technologies. The successful candidate will be expected to establish collaborations and scientific research programs that take advantage of the National Deep Submergence Facility at WHOI and other related technology and facilities. Additionally, opportunities for interdisciplinary research exist and collaborations are encouraged with colleagues in the other science departments, centers, and labs, as well as with researchers in the broader Woods Hole scientific community, including other institutions focused on marine research.
Success of WHOI's scientific staff is underpinned by an extensive mentoring network. Mentorship and training will be available to bolster the development of sea-going activities using deep submergence vehicles and technology for any new hire who has interest but lacks experience in such activities.
WHOI’s Scientific Staff are expected to provide for their salaries from grants and contracts. The Institution provides internal funding opportunities for developing innovative research projects and salary support when no other funding is available. Candidates hired at the pre-tenure level will receive an initial appointment for four years.
Education & Experience
Applicants should have a doctoral degree and a record of scholarly publications commensurate with their career stage. Scientific Staff members are expected to develop independent, externally-funded, and internationally-recognized research programs. They also have the option of advising graduate students and teaching courses through the MIT/WHOI Joint Program in Oceanography/Applied Ocean Science and Engineering.
