The School of Geosciences at the University of the Witwatersrand invites applications from suitably qualified candidates for a full-time permanent academic position at either Senior Lecturer or Associate Professor level to commence as soon as possible. The School enjoys a high international research profile, with strong multidisciplinary research programmes in Geology and Geophysics and has close links to the Evolutionary Studies Institute. The School has a strong focus on the Precambrian geology of South Africa and other parts of Africa, with particular strengths being in geophysics, geochemistry, petrology and economic geology. The School co-hosts the national DST/NRF Centre of Excellence in Integrated Mineral and Energy Resource Analysis (CIMERA) and the international AfricaArray Geophysics Programme. In the past 5 years it has significantly expanded its research facilities in microbeam analysis (Cameca SX5 FE EPMA, LA-ICP-MS, and TIMA), geohydrology and isotope analysis (including a state-of-the-art metal-free, ultraclean isotope laboratory).
The School seeks to appoint a candidate who will complement its existing research strengths and applied geology teaching focus. Preference will be given to candidates with a proven expertise in structural geology and/or tectonics, and how these relate to ore deposits, geodynamics, geophysical modelling, mine related seismicity, present and past climate science, environmental sustainability, and/o water resources. The level of appointment and starting salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
A successful candidate is expected to establish a research programme and publish research results in internationally accredited journals, as well as raise research funds through competitive grants and attract postgraduate students. She/he will be required to teach specialist courses in structural geology, ore deposit modelling and geodynamics at undergraduate, honours and postgraduate levels. She/he will also need to organise and lead field trips for undergraduate and postgraduate students.
Applicants must provide evidence of:
- A PhD in geological sciences
- Specialisation in one or more of the designated fields
- Good oral and written communication skills
- Industry experience and 3D modelling experience would be an advantage
The post is available at Senior Lecturer or Associate Professor level; the appointment at senior level will be based on evidence of a sustained track record of post-PhD academic research and a teaching portfolio.
