The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences of the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn invites applications for a

W3-Professorship for Dynamics of the Atmosphere

at the Institute for Geosciences, Meteorology Section, starting on October 1st, 2025.

We are looking for an internationally renowned scientist with an outstanding track record in innovative research in the theory and modelling of atmospheric processes. The focus should be on an improved understanding of atmosphere dynamics, at any space-time scale relevant to weather or climate.

Teaching is an integral part of the professorship. The future professor is expected to cover the entire range of atmospheric dynamics and theoretical meteorology in the existing B.Sc. Meteorology and Geophysics and M.Sc. Physics of the Earth and Atmosphere programs, and to contribute to the further development of the programs. A future degree program Climate Sciences will offer the possibility for further engagement. Excellent didactic skills and teaching experience are required.

The future professor is expected to build an internationally visible research team and take a leading role in the conception and implementation of interdisciplinary research projects in the field of Earth system science. Cooperation with the existing professorships at the Institute of Geosciences, with other departments of the University of Bonn as well as with partners within the Geoverbund ABC/J and at the Centre for Earth System Observation and Computational Analysis (CESOC) is desired, in particular with the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecast (ECMWF). Willingness to participate in the transdisciplinary research areas (TRAs) of the University of Bonn and the Collaborative Research Centre DETECT is welcome. Active participation in academic management is mandatory.

The hiring requirements are based on § 36 HG NRW.
