About the role

We are looking for an oceanographer, with skills spanning physical oceanography and bio-physical processes to join our oceanography and modelling team. The team's work is extremely diverse, spanning observational oceanography and modelling, to sustainably manage our environment and its resources. We require an additional resource to expand our capability.

You will have a PhD in a relevant field, be a self-starter and be able to creatively problem solve. You will also be able to code solutions to problems with large complex data sets, e.g. strong skills in Python, MATLAB or R. Additional experience in numerical modelling, bio-geochemical modelling, or satellite remote sensing, would be an advantage.

The primary purpose of this role is to undertake oceanographic research and consulting projects in collaboration with diverse teams of marine and freshwater scientists. To develop models and analyse oceanographic data while communicating results through written reports, scientific publications and oral presentations.

The successful applicant will join an experienced team of people dedicated to delivering independent world-class science to protect and restore New Zealand's marine environment. Cawthron is a diverse organisation, employing around 300 scientists, laboratory technicians, researchers and specialist staff from 35 countries. This is a full-time permanent position, based in Nelson, New Zealand.
