Working at CQUniversity

About the Coastal Marine Ecosystems Research Centre (CMERC)

Headquartered on the shoreline of the Gladstone marina, the Coastal Marine Ecosystems Research Centre (CMERC) is the only coastal and marine research facility based in Central Queensland and features world-class research equipment and laboratories with access to cutting-edge analytical capabilities. CMERC staff have strong links with local industry and community groups and are working closely with Traditional Owners to empower them as custodians of Land and Sea Country.

Our goal is to undertake research that works with nature to build an economically and environmentally sustainable future to enrich our coastal communities. To achieve this, CMERC is taking a holistic approach that recognises the place of the communities and industries that live and work along our coastlines. CMERC is undertaking proactive applied research from coastal catchments to the sea to develop practical solutions to the challenges facing coastal and marine ecosystems. We are looking for a dedicated and driven researcher to grow one of two growth research areas:

  • seagrass ecology and physiology to support largescale seed-based seagrass restoration; or
  • macroalgal ecology and physiology to complement projects examining sustainable seaweed harvesting and seaweed mariculture for biofiltration.

As a Research Fellow at CMERC, you will contribute to cutting-edge marine research initiatives. Your role involves conducting independent and original research in the field, producing impactful publications, and leading interdisciplinary projects focused on seagrass restoration and innovative seaweed biofilters. You will supervise research students, foster research partnerships, and secure external funding through compelling research proposals. This position offers a dynamic and inclusive work environment, encouraging bold thinking, integrity, and a commitment to excellence.

Join CMERC's exceptional, high-performing research team and have the chance to exercise your passion for seaweed ecology with this role. This is your opportunity to enrich your research experience at a truly great University by contributing to developing new and meaningful knowledge.

Position Requirements

  • Demonstrated strong record of publications, conference papers, reports and/or professional and/or technical contributions in the relevant discipline area which gives evidence of research potential.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage in research areas of research strength and a willingness to engage in sourcing and obtaining external grants and contracts and analysis.
  • Proven ability to undertake comprehensive investigative research work.
  • Strong fieldwork experience, including the design, coordination and safety management of fieldwork.
