The National Centre for Fisheries Research team undertakes research and consultancy services providing impartial scientific advice to inform managers, stakeholders, and Maori to underpin the sustainable management of New Zealand's fishery resources. In addition, our Auckland-based fisheries staff are involved in a wide range of collaborative projects with other NIWA teams, including marine ecology research and biosecurity surveillance.
What we're looking for:
The purpose of this position is to conduct research that investigates population and ecology issues related to the dynamics of marine fish communities, including stock assessments of inshore and shellfish species, and surveys of commercial and recreational fisheries. We seek an experienced fisheries scientist to lead and work as an effective team member across a number of multi-disciplinary projects, applying specialist expertise in statistical and other quantitative analytical research methods. You will engage widely with fisheries and ecology research staff within and outside of NIWA, providing experimental design and analytical expertise to enhance NIWA's research and consulting activities, seeking external sources of funding for research ideas, and establishing end-user and stakeholder relationships that underpin these research initiatives.
What you will bring:
To be successful in this position you will have expertise in quantitative fisheries science, which may include: fisheries survey and stock assessment methods; characterisation of commercial and/or recreational fisheries; single species and ecosystem-based fisheries management; fish ageing and understanding of population dynamics; or other relevant specialities.
A PhD specialising in quantitative fisheries, fish biology, ecosystems research, or equivalent experience, would be advantageous. You will have a proven track record preparing research tenders or funding applications, presentations to stakeholder groups, reports and scientific papers and be able to demonstrate the application of relevant statistical principles and methods to fisheries or marine ecosystem questions.
