What we're looking for:

NIWA is Aotearoa New Zealand's leading provider of aquaculture science. The purpose of this position is to play a leading role in the delivery of our aquaculture research, services, and commercialisation initiatives at our Northland Aquaculture Centre (NAC).

The successful candidate will:

  • Have broad interest and understanding in aquaculture, with proven expertise in one or more of the following:
    • Finfish or shellfish physiology
    • Recirculating aquaculture
    • Health and welfare management
    • Selective breeding programme development and management
    • Aquatic animal nutrition, alternative feedstuff development and feed science.
  • Conduct research which will maximises fed aquaculture species health, performance, and commercial viability, particularly in the context of RAS (land-based aquaculture), diet formulation and feed management.
  • Explore and deliver new funding streams to support this discipline.
  • Build relationships with stakeholders, including producers, feed suppliers, equipment providers and health specialists, to attract work and advance product commercialisation at the NAC.
  • Anticipate the role will provide opportunities to work with finfish, and algae.

  • Creativity, broad interest, drive, and experience providing science and technological leadership in aquaculture.
  • A passion for translating research findings into real world impact and crafting research questions to address real world challenges.
  • A sincere interest in making a significant contribution to NZ's aquaculture industry.

A bit about NIWA:

The position is based at NIWA's Northland Aquaculture Centre (NAC) in Ruakaka, northern New Zealand. The NAC is New Zealand's principal aquaculture research facility and aquaculture industrial park, comprising eight hectares of coastal land with infrastructure and resource consent to draw and discharge seawater from Bream Bay. A new commercial scale experimental Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS) facility at our NAC, in concert with our established production and research facilities, will provide a unique opportunity to pursue high impact research at the commercial interface.
