1 (plus*) Year funded Postdoctoral Research Assistant

Novel Mapping of the Shallow Water INFOMAR Data Set: Towards Ireland's First Shallow Water Atlas (NOMANS_TIF)

Funded Programme: Marine Institute Postdoctoral Fellowship

Project Line Manager: Professor Andy Wheeler, Professor of Geology, School of Biological, Earth & Environmental Sciences, University College Cork (UCC), Ireland

Project description: We seek a Postdoctoral Research Assistant to join the UCC Marine Geosciences Research Group (https://www.ucc.ie/en/marinegeology/) to finalise the NOMANS_TIF project outcomes. NOMANS_TIF has developed and applied semi-automated tools to delineate seabed geomorphological features culminating in the release the first, high-resolution, 110,000 km2 geomorphological map of most of the Irish continental shelf: Shelf Seabed Geomorphology Map (ISSGM v2023).

Position Description: To complete the project, we are seeking an experienced postdoctoral researcher to address either, or all, of the following tasks:

  • To apply deep-learning (fully-convolutional neural networks) to further refine existing codes for morphological analysis and classification,
  • To develop finer scale geomorphological studies of key areas from extant seismic and seabed mapping data,
  • To assist in the editing of a book- format Geomorphological Atlas of the Irish Shelf.

The successful candidate will be a staff member in the School of Biological, Earth & Environmental Sciences at University College Cork, starting as soon as possible, with a salary from €42,031 up to €48,427 depending on experience. *Duration of appointment will depend on salary allocation (minimum 1 year).

Candidate Experience: The candidate should have a PhD in computer science, marine geology or relevant discipline as well as advanced experience in GIS (essential). In addition, the candidate must have (essential) experience in: (1) machine learning (fully-convolutional neural networks) applied to remotely sensed data, and either/or (2) shallow seismic data analysis and marine geomorphology/geology. The candidate must have strong written English skills (essential).

Application: Applications must be submitted online via the University College Cork vacancy portal (https://ore.ucc.ie/), Reference Number 076791. Closing date for application is 12 noon on Friday, 24th May, 2024.
