PDRA - Mineralogy and Geochemistry of Nickel-Cobalt Ores

The post

The College wishes to recruit a Postdoctoral Research Associate to support the work of Dr Hannah Hughes and Prof Jens Andersen at Camborne School of Mines on the Penryn Campus.

This EU/UKRI funded post is available from 1st December 2022 to 31st May 2026.

The successful applicant will be supporting the EU/UKRI funded ENICON project on developing novel processing methods for Ni-Co ores within Europe.

The post will include the collection and characterisation of ores, mineral concentrates, process intermediates and waste (including leachates) from various mines and sources, using optical and electron microscopy, in situ mineralogical analytical techniques (Electron Microprobe, LA-ICPMS, QEMSCAN) alongside bulk geochemical analysis (XRF, AAS, ICP-MS). A mass balance approach will be developed to understand the deportment of metals (and potential co-products and deleterious components) and causes of losses. The work will also involve the write-up of operating procedures, technical manuals, progress reports and scientific publications.

About you

The successful applicant will have a PhD (or nearing completion) in geology, geoscience or related discipline and with a background in the mineralogy and analytical geochemistry of sulphide and oxide ores. Experience with the investigation of ores by reflected and transmitted light optical microscopy is essential. It is also desirable for you to have experience with electron-probe microanalysis, laser-ablation ICP-MS or equivalent methods. You should have knowledge of health, safety and quality control in laboratory environments.
