Researcher with/without PhD - Snow avalanche detection and forecasting for the Austrian Alpine region

(40 hours a week; fixed-term employment for the period of 1 year with the objective of continuation in follow-up projects)

Job definition

  • Project title: Snow avalanche detection and forecasting for the Austrian Alpine region
  • Project duration: 1.10.2021 - 30.9.2022
  • Development of a data pipeline that can process SAR remote sensing and reanalysis weather data for detection of snow avalanches together with national and international collaborators
  • A publication assessing the potential of a snow avalanche detection and forecasting system based on remote sensing and reanalysis weather data in the Austrian Alps written together with national and international collaborators
  • Support proposal writing for follow-up project (planned duration 3 years)

Your skills

Required:

  • Experience in scientific programming (python)
  • Motivation to continue work in follow-up projects
  • Ability to work in a team and conduct independent research
  • English language skills

Preferable, but NOT required:

  • PhD in remote sensing, geophysics or similar
  • Experience in remote sensing (SAR), machine learning, data pipelines, and snow avalanches
  • Successful international publication activity
  • Experience in project management and acquisition
  • German language skills

Our offer

  • Classification in University collective agreement: B1
  • Salary: EUR 3889.50 gross/month
  • Regular contract or 'Werkvertrag' (consulting contract)
  • Possibility to work at the University and/or remote (relocation to Graz is preferable, but not required)
