If you're passionate about the environment and thrive on having autonomy to shape your work, then this position could be just what you're after.

As the Spatial Analyst for Otago Regional Council's Environmental Implementation group, you'll support the delivery of important environmental programmes and outcomes. This includes biosecurity work such as the Regional Pest Management Plan; biodiversity work to protect our indigenous flora and fauna; and community catchment work to support better land use practices.

Whether your preference is rugged coastlines, alpine lakes, spectacular mountains, or urban environments with character, you can enjoy an incredible lifestyle in Otago. Also on offer is flexibility, work life balance and career challenge.

The Challenge:

  • Gather, manage, analyse, and present spatial and other data to understand impact and inform decision-making related to evaluation and planning of environmental work programmes.
  • Utilise technologies and software such as ArcGIS Pro, ESRI GIS tools, remote sensing, UAVs, and Excel.
  • Collaborate with your colleagues within the Environmental Implementation and GIS teams, attending meetings and going out in the field to understand and deliver to requirements.
  • Develop and manage your programme of work, ensuring that what you deliver is fit for purpose and will aid decision-making and, ultimately, environmental outcomes.

Your Skills:

  • Degree qualification in geography, GIS, resource management, ecology or a related field.
  • Ideally have 3+ years' experience, but a minimum of 1 year of applied experience (after graduating) using spatial analysis and geographic information systems.
  • A solution-focused approach to work
  • A strong commitment to accuracy and attention to detail.
  • A scientific curiosity and ability to think outside the box.
