GIS Technical Support Lead and Trainer

The https://agsci.psu.edu/ seeks a GIS Technical Support Lead and Trainer trained in GIS and coding with experience in agriculture or natural resources as well as customer support or delivering training programs to serve as the GIS Technical Support Lead and Trainer for the new Center for Agricultural Conservation Assistance Training. The Center provides education, outreach, coordination, and technical assistance to conservation professionals, farmers, and agricultural landowners. As GIS Technical Support Lead and Trainer for the Center, this position will aid in developing GIS reporting and planning tools, provide technical support to tool users (particularly county conservation districts, the State Conservation Commission, USDA NRCS, and other entities involved in agricultural conservation), and provide group and individual training on using the tools. This position reports to the Director of the Center for Agricultural Conservation Assistance Training.

Job Responsibilities:

This position will:

  • Serve as the online tools technical support and training lead for the Center for Agricultural Conservation Assistance Training.
  • Provide customer service, computer coding, web development, data documentation, database management support, and educational training programs related to the Center's Online ACAP Reporting and Ag Conservation Planning Tool.
  • Require knowledge of natural resource conservation, nutrient management, and/or soil conservation.

Expectations and Areas of Responsibility:

  • Coordinate with the Center Director and the Center's GIS team, including an external GIS contractor, to develop, implement, and test procedures to support the Online ACAP Reporting and Ag Conservation Planning system.
  • Serve as the key point of contact for the Center's GIS tools, handle calls and emails regarding the GIS tools, including troubleshooting, user accounts, and other questions.
  • Provide training (classroom, webinar, one-on-one) to conservation professionals and other audiences on using the Center's GIS planning and reporting tools.
  • Identify opportunities for GIS tool improvements and develop strategies for implementing priority features, make visual improvements to the user interface of GIS planning and reporting tools used by the Center, make minor GIS tool development changes, and work with an identified contractor for significant updates and revisions.
  • Maintain the GIS tool's informational website using Plone and other Extension-provided web hosting tools.
  • The tools being developed and supported by this position are brand new, and this person must be able to develop materials and support responses from scratch as well as complete the feedback loop to improve the tools over time.

This is a limited term position funded for one year from date of hire with excellent possibility of refunding. This position will work fully remote.

Required Qualifications:

This position typically requires a Bachelor's degree or higher plus 4 years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience in Information Technology, Project Management, Customer Service, Educational Training and Tool Development and Delivery, Web Content Development, or a related program areas (4-7 years of experience preferred). Additional requirements include:

  • Effective and demonstrated leadership, human relations, teamwork, and communication skills.
  • Outstanding oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated experience in Natural Resources and Agriculture related work.
  • Effective capabilities with communication, presentation, customer management, project management, and other technology platforms.
  • Familiarity with Plone, ArcGIS, Javascript, Database management (SQL), CSS .
