Junior Professor of Volcano Seismology
Salary grade W 1 LBesG | Civil servant with a fixed-term contract
The position will be part of the Institute of Geosci-ences, which is equipped with state-of-the-art ana-lytical, experimental and modelling research facili-ties. The Institute of Geosciences has research strengths in paleoclimate and dynamics of the solid Earth with a particular focus on magmatic systems. It leads the "Terrestrial Magmatic Systems" (TeMaS) collaborate research center with colleagues from Frankfurt, Heidelberg and Munich, which aims to understand magmatic processes from the mantle to the atmosphere, combining research expertise from experimental petrology to atmospheric physics. It is also part of the "Multiscale Modelling Mainz" re-search center (M3ODEL) which brings together researchers from different disciplines to develop and apply new modelling techniques to understand multiscale processes. The Max Planck Institute for Chemistry (with a focus on atmospheric and climate chemistry), and the Institute for Geothermal Energy Management (IGEM) are also affiliated with JGU.
Collaborations within TeMaS, M3ODEL, IGEM, and the Max Planck Graduate Center are possible and highly desired. JGU also hosts the Climate & Re-sources Lab of the FORTHEM Alliance, which pro-vides opportunities for innovative blended co-education with 8 European partner institutions.
Your tasks
We are looking for a researcher (m/f/d) with a strong potential to become an international leader in their field of research, and to develop an innova-tive research and teaching program that comple-ments and expands existing research strengths of the Institute of Geosciences.
The area of research is seismology with a focus on volcanic or magmatic systems.
The successful candidate is expected to teach courses in the B.Sc. and M.Sc. Geosciences pro-grams and in the M.Sc. Computational Sciences program.
Courses can be taught in English. JGU expects its staff to learn German in a reasonable period of time in order to be able to teach in German. Sup-port is provided, if necessary.
Participation in academic self-governance and active acquisition of external funding and collaboration in major funding applications of the institute is ex-pected.
Requirements:
We expect qualified candidates to have developed their own scientific profile after completing their doctorate to have published innovative and signifi-cant publications in leading scientific journals, and/or to have acquired independent research fund-ing, and can demonstrate pedagogical aptitude.
The state of Rhineland-Palatinate and JGU are committed to close personal mentoring of students and therefore expect teaching staff to have a strong presence at the university. A cooperative, team-oriented, and proactive work attitude, strong com-munication skills, and the willingness to assume responsibility - including further professional devel-opment in accordance with JGU's leadership guide-lines - is also expected.
In addition to the general requirements according to public services law, applicants must meet the re-cruitment requirements stipulated in Section 54 of the Hochschulgesetz of Rhineland-Palatinate. Junior professors are appointed as civil servants for a period of six years.
In the third year, the junior professor's performance level will be evaluated in order to provide orienta-tion for the following three years.
