Otago Regional Council manages the land, air and water resources, and provides flood and natural hazard protection and response on behalf of communities across Central Otago, Clutha, Waitaki, Queenstown Lakes and Dunedin. Otago covers a vast area (it's the third largest region in New Zealand) with diverse and complex alpine to coastal geological and hydrological environments.

We're on the lookout of an Engineer or Scientist with expertise in water resources, flood hydrology, flood forecasting, flood risk management to join our Natural Hazards team. You'll enjoy plenty of variety ...from designing approaches for flood forecasting to real time flood response, this role has it all.

The Challenge:

  • Deliver multi-year work programmes to improve the understanding of flood hazard and risk in the Otago region.
  • Lead flood analysis and flood hazard investigations.
  • Oversee the development, improvement and operation of hydrological monitoring and flood forecast systems.
  • Provide expert advice, including to hearing panels and Environment Court when required.
  • Contribute to climate change resilience and adaptation planning.
  • Support real time flood responses as a member of the Flood Management Team or Emergency Co-ordination Centre.
  • Engage with community and project stakeholders, and form collaborative working relationships internally and with District and City Councils, Emergency Management Otago, consultants and contractors.

Your Skills:

  • Degree qualification in the field of hydrology, river hydraulics, fluvial geomorphology, or civil/environmental/water resources engineering.
  • 7+ years of related experience in hydrological processes, water resources, or river hydraulics, including knowledge of flood forecasting models and techniques.
  • Scientific curiosity combined with a strong practical bent.
  • Highly collaborative team member.

This is a full-time permanent position with a starting salary of $92,000 to $108,000 NZD per annum dependent on skills and experience.
