Assistant Professor (tenure track) in Hydrology
and environmental change


The University of Lausanne is a higher teaching and research institution composed of seven faculties where approximately 17,000 students and nearly 5,000 research, teaching and technical staff work and study. The Faculty of Geosciences and the Environment (FGSE) of the University of Lausanne invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Hydrology and environmental change, to be based at the Institute of Earth Surface Dynamics (IDYST).

We are interested in candidates seeking an integrated understanding of anthropogenic effects on the terrestrial water cycle, with a focus on water quality at scales from the local to the regional. The proposed research could, for instance, aim at bridging gaps between surface and subsurface waters, between water quantity and quality or elucidate the influence of extremes (e.g., droughts, flooding, wildfires) on water quality. The investigative approach could, for example, rely on environmental tracers and isotopes; field or laboratory-scale experiments using innovative sensing technology; monitoring; numerical modeling; big data and machine learning. The successful candidate will be expected to develop links with some of the existing research strengths at IDYST, including climate change, soil science, biogeochemistry, aquatic ecosystems, Alpine environments, and remote sensing. We welcome candidates who are willing to address sustainable water management in the context of the planet boundaries framework, by collaborating with other institutes and University-wide collaborative platforms (e.g., CLIMACT, CIRM, Competence Centre in Sustainability). Support will be provided to allow the successful candidate to successively grow into the position.


Appointment will be at the Assistant Professor level (tenure track) for which the net academic age since the PhD (see below) should be less than 8 years at the advertised starting date. However, we will consider outstanding candidates for direct appointment at the Associate Professor level, particularly if this corresponds with our equal opportunity objectives.

Starting date: 1st of August, 2023 (or to be agreed upon)
Contract length: 2 years renewable twice (6 years). Tenure and promotion to the rank of Associate Professor expected after 5-6 years.
Activity rate: 100 % (or to be agreed upon)

Net academic age

If you have had formally approved leave or part-time employment since the date of award of the PhD you may upload a net academic age document. Such leave could be for maternity, paternity, adoption, caring duties, illness or accident, service (e.g., military civil), continuing education or unemployment. The successful candidate is expected to i) develop a competitive research program with external funding within the Institute of Earth Surface Dynamics, ii) teach hydrology-related courses at the BSc and MSc levels that links both theoretical and practical aspects of the subject, as well as field classes, and iii) supervise bachelor, master, and doctoral students.


A PhD in a relevant area at the date of appointment is required and postdoctoral experience is expected. Candidates should demonstrate a capacity to undertake high quality research, to obtain research funding, and to publish in peer-reviewed international research journals. A demonstrated potential for teaching and for supervising master and doctoral theses is required. If French is not the native language, teaching ability in French must be acquired within two years of the appointment.

What the position offers

The FGSE manages outstanding laboratory facilities and field equipment, and it offers excellent working conditions. It consists of three research institutes (Earth Sciences, Geography and Sustainability, and Earth Surface Dynamics) and a School that manages teaching. It employs 50 professors and more than 10 senior lecturers, some 200 PhD students and post-docs, and more than 60 technical staff. The FGSE specifically promotes interdisciplinary research and teaching, within and between the social and natural sciences.
