Master of Hydrogeology

Groundwater makes up over 95% of all liquid fresh water on Earth and is critical for maintaining food production and ecosystems in an increasingly populated world. The people, environment and economy of Perth, Australia, are heavily reliant on groundwater resources, making it a global hot-spot for groundwater professionals. This makes the University of Western Australia (UWA) ideally placed to provide the training and networking opportunities you need to pursue or enhance your career in Hydrogeology. UWA's Master of Hydrogeology provides a robust training pathway for students with geology, environmental science/geoscience or environmental engineering degrees to train as Hydrogeologists.

This course provides in-depth, practical training on hydrogeological processes and techniques, taught by world-recognised academic researchers and industry professionals. Students undertaking this course have opportunities to work on real-world data sets and contribute to cutting-edge research. UWA is ranked in the top 1% of Universities worldwide, and UWA Earth and Marine Sciences is ranked equal 30th worldwide and 2nd in Australia (QS ranking 2022).

What you'll learn: The course covers topics including groundwater flow systems, basin analysis, field hydrogeology, aquifer characterization, groundwater hydrochemistry and numerical groundwater modelling. Students gain experience in mining hydrogeology, groundwater contamination and remediation, environmental hydrogeology and water resource assessment.

Career opportunities: Postgraduate study makes you ideally placed to provide critical technical leadership on global issues of water, food and resource security. Completion of this course opens opportunities for employment with mining companies, government agencies and consulting firms.

Completion of a research project in the Masters course provides a potential pathway to higher study.

About the course: 1.5 to 2 years full time (part-time available). Commencing in Semester 1 (late February) or Semester 2 (late July). Students may apply to undertake a research project within this degree. Coursework units in the first year are offered online.

Admission requirements: A bachelor's degree in geoscience, environmental science or environmental/water resource engineering, or their combinations, or an equivalent qualification as recognized by UWA. You must also demonstrate a minimum level of English Language Competence.
