Engineering Technician I: $6,262.53 - $8,020.13 monthly
Engineering Technician II: $6,909.07 - $8,845.20 monthly
Engineering Technician III: $7,626.67 - $9,760.40 monthly

Valley Water Telework Program: Eligibility for telework will depend on the type of work performed, operational needs, and the ability for the employee to perform the essential functions of their job duties while teleworking. Employment with Valley Water requires employees to live within 150 miles of their primary physical work location located in San Jose, California by their start date.

This position requires the individual to be onsite and is not a teleworking position.

Overview: Do you want to make a difference in your community by ensuring that over 1.9 million people get clean water every day? Valley Water is looking for a highly capable Engineering Technician I/II/III to join the Computer Aided Design and Drafting (CADD) Services Team. The CADD Services Unit is responsible for providing quality engineering, graphic, and presentation services in support of planning, design, construction, operation, and maintenance of Valley Water's critical infrastructure, as well as managing Valley Water's computer aided drafting and design systems.

The Engineering Technician is an integral part of the CADD Services team, which supports Valley Water's mission to provide flood protection and watershed stewardship services to Santa Clara county.

The Engineering Technician will prepare, present, create, amend, update, and maintain engineering drawings, plans, maps, reports, and specifications for projects; they may also perform field surveys and collection of field data, and perform a variety of tasks related to the development of civil water resources engineering project drawings.

They will perform drafting work and ensure adherence to relevant standards and specifications using AutoCAD, Civil 3D and other Computer Aided Drafting and Design software.

The Engineering Technician III will also assist in reviewing the work of interns and with the production and maintenance of standard drafting and technical manuals for Valley Water.

This position reports to the Office of Integrated Water Management, a unit critical to Valley Water's mission.

Key Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Create and develop complex map and graphic displays using AutoCAD and Civil 3D software, including two-dimensional and three-dimensional plans, profiles, cross sections, structure details, site plans, charts, signs, and other aides.
  • Compile and research data; review, verify, and check design criteria for accuracy and conformance to engineering design standards; make alterations to plans during design and construction; produce as-built drawings and specifications.
  • Ensure adherence to guidelines established in the CADD Standards Manual.
  • Produce and maintain standard drafting and technical manuals for the Valley Water as assigned; oversee the Valley Water's collection of drafting and other technical materials; cataloging all materials obtained.
  • Conduct field inspections to gather data such as distances, measurements, structures, location of mechanical equipment and other topographical features.
  • Organize and maintain all revisions of project drawings, plot files, and project-related information per Valley Water's policies and procedures.
  • Assist staff with CAD technical issues, training, and other CAD system or standards issues.
  • Create image files by scanning documents; remain current on new hardware and software developments.

Ideal Experience:

  • Engineering Technician Level I: 1 year experience with planning providing engineering technical support to civil design projects and civil water resources related engineering projects.
  • Engineering Technician Level II: 2 years' experience with planning providing engineering technical support to civil design projects and civil water resources related engineering project.
  • Engineering Technician Level III: 4 years' experience with planning providing engineering technical support to civil design projects and civil water resources related engineering project.

Ideal Experience for all three levels I/II/III

  • Experience in developing engineering drawing sets using AutoCAD and Civil 3D for different phases of a Capital project: planning, design, construction and/or close out.
  • Experience in preparing engineering drawings related to the construction and renovation of water related infrastructure.
  • Experience applying CADD standards.
  • Experience using the Layers Properties Manager and externally referencing drawings.

Ideal Skills and Abilities:

  • Analyze information and make recommendations for corrective actions.
  • Ability to create 3-D drawings and/or models.
  • Ability to complete basic calculations related to civil engineering drawings.
  • Proficient use of AutoCAD and/or Civil 3D software.
  • Ability to conceptualize 3D surfaces, build plan and profiles, calculate surface quantities, and to effectively manage smaller civil projects with minimal supervision.
  • Conduct field surveys, inspections, and investigations to obtain and verify water resources, and engineering data.
  • Ability to set project priorities and exercise sound independent judgment within established procedural guidelines.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Utilize tools, equipment and materials safely as related to assigned work.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Must have basic PC experience in Windows environments, working knowledge of word processing, spreadsheets, email, web-enabled application, and database software.
  • Ability to use common desktop applications such as MS Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook).
  • Effectively represent the CADD Services Unit in meetings with other Valley Water groups.
  • Good Attitude/Hard Working/Team player.
  • Highly motivated to provide excellent customer service.

Ideal Knowledge:

Engineering Technician I:

  • Principles and practices of manual and computer-aided drafting and design.
  • Operational characteristics of equipment and materials used in conducting field surveys and ability to update engineering drawings, maps, and related materials.
  • Prepare clear and concise reports.
  • Knowledge and/or use of GIS and other engineering design modeling software a plus.
  • Algebra, geometry, and trigonometry associated with drafting and other technical tasks.
  • Principles and practices of data collection and management.
  • Methods and techniques of field inspections.
  • Methods and techniques of map making.
  • Read and interpret construction drawings and specifications
  • Best practices for office procedures, methods, and equipment, and applications related to the work including CADD, GPS and GIS programs.

Engineering Technician II:

In addition to the qualifications for Engineering Technician I:

  • Principles of research and report preparation.
  • Methods and techniques of designing and creating visual graphics and displays.
  • Civil engineering practices and terminology in assigned program area.
  • Operations, services, and activities of a public water agency.
  • Principles and methods of spatial analysis.
  • Principles and practices of manual and computer-aided drafting and design.
  • Operational characteristics of hardware and software applications in assigned area, including technical engineering, graphics presentation, CADD, GPS, and GIS programs.
  • Best practices for office procedures, methods, and equipment, and applications related to the work including CADD, GPS and GIS programs.

Engineering Technician III:

In addition to the qualifications for Engineering Technician II:

  • Methods and techniques of designing and creating a variety of visual graphics and displays.
  • Principles of research and report preparation.
  • Methods and techniques of creating and managing computer databases.
  • Methods and techniques of 3-D drafting and/or modeling.
  • Principles and methods of spatial analysis.
  • Operations, services, and activities of a public water agency.
  • Methods and techniques of designing and creating visual graphics and displays.
  • Civil engineering practices and terminology in assigned program area.
  • Methods and techniques of map making.

Ideal Training and Education:

  • Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by twelve (12) college semester units in engineering, geography, mathematics, or a related field.
  • Associate's in Drafting/Design, Civil Engineering Technology, Surveying, or related field from an accredited college/university is desirable.

Required License or Certificate

  • CADD certificate is desirable.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid California driver's license. Individuals who do not meet the driver's license requirement due to a disability will be considered for a reasonable accommodation on a case-by-case basis.
