Senior Catastrophe Research Analyst (Flood specialist)

The Model Research and Evaluation is a multi-national team of enthusiastic and team-oriented individuals who work closely with our research partners and internal stakeholders to translate the latest science and technology into solutions to help clients manage their natural catastrophe risk. Catastrophe modelling plays a key role in the (re)insurance industry, helping to determine the capital and reinsurance requirements of (re)insurance companies. A number of catastrophe modelling options are available in the market and it is very important to understand their strengths and weaknesses, as well as develop alternative solutions, in order to help Willis Re clients form their ’view of risk’. The role of the Model Research and Evaluation team is rapidly expanding, as more data becomes available, more models are built, regulation makes stricter demands on model users and, generally, the sophistication of model users increases.

The Senior Catastrophe Research Analyst will work within the Model Research and Evaluation team at Willis Re International and will lead flood model research and evaluation projects to ultimately define the Willis Re view of catastrophe risk for a peril/region and inform (re)insurance decision making.

The Role

  • The main responsibility is the evaluation and assessment of catastrophe flood risk models. This process involves:
    • collecting and processing third party data, e.g. satellite data, government flood defence data, sea level rise from climate change models, academic vulnerability curves, etc
    • analysing and validating catastrophe model outputs
    • producing/editing evaluation reports
  • Lead the design, planning, coordination and production of relevant model sensitivity analyses for different territories (world-wide coverage)
  • Research flood-specific topics from the scientific literature as requested by our clients
  • Communicate effectively with team members, business-units and brokers
  • Collaborate with and provide guidance for junior members of the team to undertake model evaluation and adjustment projects
  • Collaborate with model vendor experts to understand their new models / model updates and compare / contrast choices made between model vendors
  • Communicate effectively with team members, business-units and brokers
  • Write reports, create presentations, produce plots and proof-read documents
  • Support team members on automating output generation processes
